Our story

Built by an inspector
who got tired of the
way things were.

From a Saturday afternoon drive to a live inspection platform. This is how 1nspecT happened.

My name is Mike McCown. For 25 years I worked in technology — building the teams that built the hardware and software products that you interact with every day. I spent my career understanding how good products get made, what separates elegant engineering from clunky engineering, and what it looks like when a tool genuinely serves the person using it.

I also spent years on the other side of a clipboard. My wife Vicky and I bought, renovated, and sold multiple properties. I received inspection reports from multiple platforms. Some were excellent. Most were adequate. All of them made me wonder why the software seemed to be fighting the inspector rather than helping them.

When I moved from inspection client to inspector and started using the software, I found out firsthand.

"I was swearing more than I should during inspections. My phone battery was dying halfway through the job. I'd built a narrative library to speed things up — it made the scrolling worse. I finally gave up and just took photos with captions. Which meant three hours of report writing every single night after the inspection."

I eventually gave up on writing reports in the field and switched to pure field capture — photos with captions, sorted and written up later. For a year, I accepted that as the job. Sort photos into sections. Write narratives. Send the report at 11pm. Repeat.

I was driving between appointments on a Saturday afternoon when the thought arrived — not gradually, but all at once, like a door opening. I'd like to take credit for it. I can't explain where it came from. But it was completely clear:

"You're just building a database. Why navigate ten screens when you can capture everything on one screen — and build separate screens for report review and the client walkthrough?"

I didn't spend my career as a developer. But the idea was so clear, so complete, and so obviously correct that I couldn't argue with it. I started developing the mobile app, building it first as proof of concept. Will single-screen capture work? Will the Review screen concept help inspectors provide a better end-of-inspection walkthrough for their clients?

The months that followed weren't easy. I learned to build software the way I'd learned everything else in my career: by immersing myself in the language of people who knew more than me, leaning on AI tools to bridge the gap between vision and execution, and refusing to accept anything less than the vision that arrived as a complete product spec.

Vicky — "The Boss" on her business card, and the only reason any of this actually happened — kept the faith through every late night, every rebuild, every moment I wondered if the idea was bigger than I was.

Early 2026, I published the first live inspection report through 1nspecT.

One Saturday afternoon drive to a working platform. The report that used to take three hours is now done before you leave the driveway.

We built 1nspecT on faith, persistence, and a touch of humor. We built it for every inspector who's sat at their kitchen table at 11pm writing reports they should have been able to finish on-site. We built it because there had to be a better way — and we couldn't wait for someone else to build it.
